Does Companion Planting Really Reduce Garden Pests?

Many gardeners swear by companion planting as a natural way to keep pests away. You'll often hear that marigolds protect tomatoes, basil repels insects around peppers, or certain flowers keep entire gardens pest-free. But how much of this is gardening wisdom, and how much is wishful thinking?

Because some gardeners have positive experiences with companion planting, the practice continues to gain popularity. The challenge is separating combinations that have scientific support from those based mainly on anecdotal evidence.

What Actually Happens

Pests find plants using a combination of sight, scent, and environmental cues. In theory, growing multiple plant species together can interfere with this process.

Researchers have identified several ways companion plants may influence pest activity:

  • Masking crop scents that pests use to locate host plants.
  • Providing habitat and food sources for beneficial insects.
  • Increasing plant diversity, making it harder for pests to spread rapidly.
  • Acting as trap crops that attract pests away from valuable crops.

However, these effects vary widely depending on the pest, crop, climate, and garden layout.

For example, flowering plants such as alyssum, dill, fennel, and yarrow can attract beneficial insects including hoverflies, lacewings, and parasitic wasps. These insects help control aphids, caterpillars, and other common garden pests.

This benefit is supported by a growing body of research. In this case, companion planting is not directly repelling pests. Instead, it improves habitat for natural predators that help keep pest populations under control.

On the other hand, many commonly repeated claims lack strong scientific evidence. Planting basil next to tomatoes may provide some benefits, but research has not consistently shown dramatic reductions in pest damage. Likewise, many popular companion charts contain recommendations that have never been rigorously tested.

Marigolds offer another example of mixed evidence. Certain marigold varieties can help suppress some soil nematodes when grown and incorporated into the soil over time. However, simply placing a few marigolds near vegetables does not necessarily create significant pest protection.

When It Might Be True

Companion planting is most likely to provide measurable benefits under specific conditions.

One of the strongest examples involves attracting beneficial insects. Gardens that include a variety of flowering plants often support larger populations of pollinators and natural predators.

Another proven strategy is trap cropping. Certain plants can lure pests away from valuable crops. For example, nasturtiums may attract aphids, while some mustard crops can attract flea beetles. When managed correctly, these plants can concentrate pest activity away from the main harvest.

Companion planting may also help in small home gardens where plant diversity is naturally high. Mixed plantings can create a more complex environment that slows pest movement compared to large blocks of a single crop.

However, even successful companion planting rarely eliminates the need for other management practices. Healthy soil, proper spacing, crop rotation, sanitation, physical barriers, and regular monitoring remain important parts of integrated pest management.

There are also situations where companion planting may have little effect. If pest populations are already high or environmental conditions strongly favor outbreaks, companion plants alone are unlikely to prevent damage.

Gardeners should also avoid overcrowding. Adding too many companion plants can reduce airflow, increase disease risk, and create competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients.

Companion planting is neither a miracle solution nor a gardening myth that should be completely dismissed. Some companion planting practices have legitimate biological explanations and scientific support, particularly those that attract beneficial insects or function as trap crops.
